It is estimated that more than 1 million people in the UK have Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). OSA is more common in middle-aged and older adults, and it's more common in men than women. However, sleep apnoea rates increase in women after menopause.

OSA occurs when relaxed muscles and a completely or partially collapsed airway interrupt breathing during sleep, and can happen repeatedly through the night (over five times an hour for over 10 seconds). Untreated OSA can lead to health complications, whilst treatment can improve quality of life and help regulate blood pressure.

Such sleep fragmentation as seen in OSA sufferers can cause daytime fatigue, sleepiness and a variety of routine alterations that affect daily tasks and overall quality of life. OSA can even cause the entire metabolism can be altered, and lead to higher risk of heart failure, high blood pressure and stroke as a result of reduced levels of oxygen in the blood.
